DHS Announces 30-Day Extension of Travel Restrictions with Canada, Mexico

The Department of Homeland Security has announced that existing travel restrictions in place with Canada and Mexico have been extended for an additional 30 days, until May 21.

In a brief statement, Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf confirmed that the US, Mexico, and Canada have each agreed to extend restrictions on non-essential travel across their shared borders for 30 additional days to slow the spread of COVID-19 and aid the phased opening of the country.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the agreement on Saturday, but this was the first official confirmation by US government officials.

The restrictions on non-essential travel between the US, Canada and Mexico took effect on March 21, while allowing trade and other travel deemed essential to continue.
